Japanese is a language spoken by over 130 million people, mainly in Japan, but also by Japanese emigrant communities around the world, especially in Brazil, Korea, Taiwan, parts of the Chinese mainland, various Pacific islands, Peru, Australia, and the United States. Japanese descendants are called Nikkei.

Due to Japan's increasing economic and cultural presence and influence in the world, several million non-Japanese study the language and Japanese language courses are offered in many schools, both at the primary and secondary levels.

The Japanese language is written with a combination of three different types of scripts: Chinese characters, kanji, and two syllabic scripts, hiragana and katakana. The Latin alphabet, rōmaji, is also often used in modern Japanese, especially for company names and logos, advertising, and when inputting Japanese into a computer. Western style Arabic numerals are generally used for numbers, but traditional Sino-Japanese numerals are also commonplace.

Japanese vocabulary has been heavily influenced by "borrowing" words from other languages, most notably Chinese, English and Dutch. (reference: Wikipedia.org).
